The Island Victoria Hislop, 2005 HarperCollins 480 pp. ISBN-13: 9780061340321 Summary The Petrakis family lives in the small Greek seaside village of Plaka. Just off the coast is the tiny island of Spinalonga, where the nation’s leper colony once was located—a place that has haunted four generations of Petrakis women.. The story is essentially about one family, the Petrakis’ family and how leprosy visits the family, first with the mother, Eleni and then the youngest daughter, Maria. But this is so much more than a story about a family affected by leprosy and the leprosy community of Spinalonga.

Island Book 201920
The history of leprosy was traced to its origins by an international team of 22. Traité de la Spedalskhed ou Elephantiasis des Grecs – the standard reference book on leprosy from 1848 until the death of Danielssen in 1895.. which he used to establish a plantation of 2,980 trees on the island of Oahu, Hawaii between 1921 and 1922. There.. It’s a fascinating premise, and Victoria Hislop brings it all vividly to life. Particularly interesting are the scenes set in the leper colony. The book is very plainly and directly told, which means it was an easy read, but I did not feel deeply invested in many of the characters. The book also takes place over many years, in the tradition.
